I recently went down to Stellenbosh (Cape Town) on business for two weeks and I had the good fortune of enjoying a few delicious cups of morning sunshine (a.k.a coffee) while I was in this quaint little town. Aside from the amazing wine produced in the area I was actually quite surprised at just how seriously the good folk of Stellenbosh take their coffee! Given the early mornings I had to get through to work on time, I had quite a few opportunities to taste test at the various coffee houses in town and this list of my five top picks from this trip. There were many more quaint little spots I found but I ran out of time to visit them all so I have a feeling this may be one of several reviews of coffee spots in Stellies.
I thoroughly enjoyed the coffee and the vibe at Hazz. For starters their slogan rocks: Coffee for Heroes! They roast their own coffee on the premises and all the staff including the barista who poured for me were very friendly and helpful. This was probably the best cup of coffee I tasted while I was in Stellenbosh, so much so that I went back several times. The shop has a cool hipster vibe and plenty of space to sit and work if you need to crank out a few e-mails while enjoy your cuppa, but be warned it gets busy so make sure you get there early!
The Mill Coffee House
Sam is the barista at The Mill Coffee House and he pours a mean cup of their in house coffee brand called Tomeucci Coffee. Arno who owns this cute little shop on the corner of Dorp and Mill street is the local banting pioneer and has dreamt up the most amazing low carb high fat menu that he offers to willing taste testers. I love-love-loved every meal I had there and every time I pop in Arno has something new on the menu to tantalize my taste buds. The vibe is relaxed and if you are fortunate enough to visit in summer and the wind isn’t blowing you can enjoy your lunch out on the pavement and watch the world go by while you are enjoying your coffee.
The all white minimalist interior is what caught my eye when I first walked in to Maraki. They serve Legado Coffee which is fabulous, and if you are fortunate enough to be there over lunch they also have a harvest table to enjoy a variety of freshly prepared meals from. The table I was seated at had my favourite fynbos flowers sitting in a neatly arranged vase which I think is what made me fall in love…. Fynbos + Coffee = Love. They are super busy though and there were a lot of students visiting on the day so be prepared for a bunch of people studying and typing away on their computers scattered around the shop. In short: lovely venue and a great cup of coffee.
Schoon De Companje
This little gem serves up a variety of different roasts from all over the world, they roast their coffee in house and most mornings I passed, I could smell the fresh roast from down the street. They also stock an array of great coffee gadgets like Aeropress, pour over coffee pots and Chemex to thrill your inner coffee geek! Schoon De Companje is a deli come coffee shop with a difference… the shop is made up of various different vendors in the form of small “stalls” inside the shop (kind of like a little indoor market) who offer an assortment of delicious eats from homemade ice-cream, a bakery, deli goods, fresh produce and a kitchen that serves up yummy eats to go with your lunchtime coffee.
Melissa’s Food Shop
Melissa’s blends their own coffee which I thought was fabulous. The best part of stopping in for my morning cuppa here was the array of treats inside the shop. Everything is packaged with the Melissa’s signature flair and I found it difficult to leave with just my coffee in hand (I can vouch for salted caramel chocolates, they are amazing!). This branch of Melissa’s is actually not the only one in South Africa, there are numerous branches around but I think it was the array of knickknacks that attracted me here on this trip… that and the little Nest shop upstairs that stocks seriously cute vintage goodies I sourced a few of as food photography props (just to satisfy my inner magpie).
Have you also enjoyed great coffee in Stellenbosh? Let me know in the comments which is your favourite so that I can save them to my bucket list for the next time I’m in town.
